Corning, Momentive, Bluestar, Shin-Etsu e Kcc. Vengono spesso accusati di non far
respirare la pelle, di essere nocivi. Ma è proprio vero? Ho voluto approfondire
Davines è una società italiana molto attenta all'ecosistema.
They are everywhere: In hospitals for post-surgical treatments (holding sealed wounds), in the automotive industry, in the building and can be found in creams, shampoos and sunscreens. I'm speaking about silicones, whose production is in the hands of a small number of giants (two American companies, one French, one Japanese and one Korean): Dow Corning, Momentive, Bluestar, Shin-Etsu and Kcc. They are often accused of not making the skin to breathe, to be harmful. But is that really true? I wanted to pursue this very delicate issue with an expert, Paolo Goi, Technical Director Davines Spa and chemical specialist in the beauty industry. Davines is an Italian company very sensitive to the ecosystem.

Attraverso processi chimici è poi possibile ottenere varie
cicatrici.
Q. What are silicones? What's the difference between the aesthetic or surgical ones and other categories?
R. Silicone is an inorganic polymer consisting of atoms of silicon and oxygen. The silicon is derived from the silica present in the sand and quartz. Through chemical processes is then possible to obtain various types of silicones which are used in many cosmetic products. Silicones are used to promote post-operative healing wounds because they create a protective barrier that allows the skin to regenerate and limit the action of the solar rays which can leave the marks of scars.

D. Ci sono siliconi buoni e siliconi cattivi?
R. Esistono
Q. Are there good and bad silicones?
A.
There are many types of cosmetic silicones: Cyclomethicones with the
ring structure, they're not greasy and very volatile
(cyclotetrasiloxane,
cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane), and those linear, usually
greasy, that do not evaporate and those in three-dimensional structure
with excellent sensory performance. Silicones
are inert molecules and mainly, to the exclusion of cyclometicone and
of very short chain polymers, are not absorbed; for this reason they are not harmful for the skin, indeed create a
film that protects the skin and even more the structure of the hair.
accumulo nell’ambiente.
Q. What is the difference between a quality and a poor product?
A. It's the concentration of use of silicones. If products are formulated with a high percentage of silicon at the
expense of functional active ingredients, although the yield on the
skin is fulfilling, the cosmetic efficacy is limited and fictitious. At low concentrations and with a group of functional actives you
can take advantage of their beneficial properties to improve the
performace and the pleasantness of cosmetics. Only
a silicone (D4) gave evidence of toxicity and for this reason its use
has been banned from cosmetics, while cyclometicones are questioning why
create accumulation in the environment.

Davines ha tolto i siliconi dalle creme
D. Perché vengono così ampiamente usati in
cosmetica?
ambientali e fisiche (stirature, asciugature) rendendo lucidi i
capelli. Essendo
Q. Why are so widely used in cosmetics?
A. They have protective properties and high tolerability, make creams
light to the touch and leave the skin feeling of "cosmetic facelift"
that perfects the skin's texture. Silicones
are also widely used in the hair care because they protect the hair from environmental and physical aggression (straightening, drying),
making the hair shiny. Being waterproof, they make sunscreens water resistance and increase the performance of both chemical and physical sunscreens.
D. Come si riconoscono i siliconi nell'Inci?
R. All’interno del nome chimico troviamo
le parole – thicone – siloxane.
Q. How do you recognize silicones in the list of ingredients?
A. Search the words - thicone - siloxane.
materiali impiegano?
R. Alcune aziende, più attente all’ambiente, tendono a
D.What materials do green-companies use to achieve the same purposes?
R.
Some companies, most environmentally conscious, tend to greatly reduce
or eliminate silicones for the type of chemical production used
and accumulation in the environment due to slow degradation times. Silicones
are in fact produced in large chemical plants with high energy
consumption using the chemistry of chlorinated compounds with little respect
for the principles of green chemistry. This choice, however, is not easy to implement: The silicone texture gives a unique attractiveness. A
great selection of oils, butters and waxes appropriately dosed, however, obtains products that have nothing to envy to the
silicones.

Q. How does Davines act on silicones?
R. Davines separates the hair from the skincare world. In
hair products, where the desired effect is primarily aesthetic and
there are no problems of absorption, silicones are used. But we are planning to replace them. In skincare instead, where functionality has a key role, silicones are no longer used, the company is constantly looking for
products that can give a sustainable long-term beauty (sustainable
long- term benefits).
D. Are silicones occlusive?
A. No, they form a water-repellent barrier but allow perspiration, so they are not comedogenic.
Q. Is it possible, reading the list of ingredients of a product, to understand the amount of silicones?
A. Inci is a list of ingredients in descending manner up to 1%, under this percentage the order can be made at random. The position occupied by the silicone is an indication of its quantity. We should then know how the products are formulated to estimate the amount. However, it becomes a very technical subject.

Senza parabeni e solfati
ottenere buone performance come texture.
D. Are silicones cheap, do they cost less than the possible natural substitutes?
A.
Some silicones, especially those with particularly fine texture, are
very expensive, even more than the possible natural substitutes. However, there are more traditional silicones much less expensive. The reason why products often formulated without silicones are more
expensive depends on the selection of natural ingredients, often not
widely used in production, that are able to get good performance as
texture.

I tried Naturaltech Replumping by Davines, a line of hair care based on two
elements: Natural active
ingredients and biotechnology research. The products do not contain parabens and the shampoo does not have sulfates. Here Davines used a plant extract of plum, a fruit rich in vitamins,
minerals, polyphenols (anti-aging) combined with hyaluronic acid,
usually used for the face.
But, in fact, the basic idea is to protect your hair as you do with the face (and here I find myself in complete agreement). The shampoo produces a soft and creamy foam that washes with great delicacy. Even
though I have fine hair, I can use both the balm that the
restructuring cream: They do not weigh, leave my hair well-nourished, light and very shiny. A real cuddle :)
