Dr Zein Obagi |
“Beauty, no pain, no gain…”, says doctor Zein Obagi, dermatologist who treated celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Ricky Martin. His clinic in Beverly Hills has just landed in Italy in partnership with Enermedica of Rome.
His thirty-year-long protocol to restore skin to its healthy
is strong: It lasts at least five months in clinic, there’s a massive use of
retinol to 1% (the creams on the market will contain at most 0.2%). And then: cleansing twice a day, once a day
scrub, control of sebum twice daily.
But how does it work? And is it suitable for everyone? Bellezzefelici has asked Chris Kraneiss, Vice President of
International Affairs of ZO Skin Health
by Zein Obagi.

Q. An invasive
method, suitable for everyone?
A.The ZO Skin
Health Circle is catered specifically for each patient based upon his/her
unique needs. As with exercise level and diet, the strength of ZO producs can
be tailored to the individual and the desired improvement can be adjusted to
satisfy any patient (male, female, young and old). After the age of 30, our
skin functions start to greatly slow down. Thus, stimulation of these functions
through topical products containing Dna repair, anti-inflammatory agents,
retinol/retinoic acid, pigment control agents, and other corrective agents
becomes essential.
Q. No pain, no gain. How
long does the protocol last?
A. We inform our patients that they will enter a
5 month period for skin restoration and deep repair with creams. Each full skin
cycle (the time it takes from skin cells to fully mature and rise upwards from
the base of the skin to the top, and subsequently be shed off) takes a full six
weeks. Three full six week cycles (18 weeks total) are necessary to reach maximal
improvement through our comprehensive
topical treatment regimens. Once this "correction" is completed, we
transition the patient to an appropriate, unique maintenance program that they
can use for the rest of their life.
Q. Deep exfoliation, redness, scaling: Can you go outside during the shock treatment? Or is it harmful to the skin?
Q. Deep exfoliation, redness, scaling: Can you go outside during the shock treatment? Or is it harmful to the skin?
A. Patients do not need to stay home while using
the topical product regimens. Although patients can (and will) undergo a period
of red, dry, and peeling skin initially (lasting approximately 6-12 weeks as
the skin is being repaired), patients can still go about their daily activities
and make-up
can be worn throughout the course of the treatment. Once the skin becomes more tolerant of the creams (after approximately two skin cycles, or 12 weeks), the redness, dryness, and peeling will lessen/subside, yet the benefits of the topical products will continue to be occuring.
